Observing and Learning from Experienced Teachers
During my teaching practicum at Integrated Laboratory School (ILS), West Visayas State University, I was assigned to teach Grade 7 Mathematics under the guidance of my Cooperating Teacher, Ma'am Cheryl Lyn C. Delgado, PhD, and Subject Teacher, Ma'am Ma. Veronica S. Mendoza.
Before stepping into the classroom as a teacher, I observed Grade 7 and 8 Mathematics classes. Some key insights:
✅ Students were highly active—sometimes too much, leading to noise if teachers weren’t firm.
✅ Teachers set clear expectations to maintain order and engagement.
✅ Interactive lessons like games and group work helped keep students focused.
And I spent time observing their teaching methods, lesson planning, and classroom management techniques. I noticed that they:
✅ Carefully planned each lesson, ensuring clear objectives and engaging activities.
✅ Used PowerPoint presentations as an essential teaching tool.
✅ Actively managed the class by maintaining discipline while encouraging participation.
✅ Used formative assessments such as quick oral quizzes and group activities to check students' understanding.
These observations helped me prepare for my own teaching sessions and understand the best ways to handle a class of energetic and competitive students.
