Preparing Lessons & Facing Challenges
Planning my lessons for Grade 7 Mathematics at Integrated Laboratory School (ILS) of West Visayas State University (WVSU), Philippines was both a challenge and a learning experience. Under the guidance of Ma’am Cheryl Lyn C. Delgado, PhD (Cooperating Teacher) and Ma’am Ma. Veronica S. Mendoza (Subject Teacher), I developed a structured and interactive lesson focused on the Application of Venn Diagrams.
Lesson Planning Process
Creating a well-organized lesson required multiple consultations with my cooperating teacher to ensure clarity, engagement, and effective knowledge transfer. Initially, I assumed lesson planning would be straightforward, but it turned out to be a complex process that involved careful structuring of content, choosing appropriate teaching methods, and designing activities that would keep students engaged.
Teaching Modes and Adjustments
At WVSU, both online and offline teaching are practiced, and I had the opportunity to experience both:
- Online Mode required me to focus on verbal explanations due to the lack of physical interaction. Ensuring student engagement without direct supervision was a challenge, but I incorporated interactive discussions to keep them involved.
- Offline Mode allowed for better interaction through group activities and real-time discussions, but preparing multimedia tools such as PowerPoint presentations and projectors required extra effort.
To address the challenges of keeping students attentive, I incorporated games, visual materials, and real-life applications to make lessons more engaging.
Classroom Engagement and Student Participation
Most of my classes were scheduled in the last period of the day, making it crucial to maintain student focus. Grade 7 students are highly active, so balancing discipline and engagement was essential. I used PowerPoint slides, interactive discussions, and quick educational games to sustain their interest. Additionally, a small language exchange activity where I introduced Indonesian words and learned Filipino words from them made the lesson more enjoyable.
Challenges and Key Takeaways
Developing a Mathematics lesson plan in English was a new experience for me. I had to ensure that complex mathematical concepts were explained in simple terms while maintaining an engaging and interactive approach. The unstable internet connection occasionally made online resource access difficult, but I adapted by preparing alternative materials in advance.Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into lesson structuring, classroom management, and interactive teaching strategies. Teaching at ILS WVSU reinforced the importance of planning, flexibility, and creativity in delivering effective lessons.
Despite these struggles, the process was a valuable learning experience. It pushed me to improve my lesson-planning skills and become more confident in teaching Mathematics in English.
